Nizwa

Nizwa is considered the political and religious center of Oman. The former capital is located about 180km south-west of Muscat on the southern edge of the Hajar Mountains. The oasis town is fed by an 500 years old Falaj system and hosts the fort with the largest tower of Oman. As you walk through the expansive souq area you can still feel the heritage of the old commercial center Nizwa once was. The souq offers fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and spices, gold and silver jewelery as well as pottery from neighboring Bahla. The animal market, which takes place every Friday morning, is one of the attractions for locals and tourists. Sheep, goats, bulls and camels are offered for purchase in traditional manner. Even though the animal market has turned into quite a crowd puller, the whole scenery remains very authentic. Due to its central location, Nizwa is a great starting point for excursions to the surrounding countryside. A selection of worthwhile destinations can be found in the menu.
