Oman is an Islamic country. 75% of Omanis belong to the Ibadite faith community. The Ibadis are considered particularly tolerant and are politically interested in resolving disagreements with respect and reason and not through confrontation. They worship God without interpreting the Koran literally. Their basic attitude is liberal and shaped by tolerance, especially towards other faiths. Christian and Jewish communities are accepted, the Koran is always interpreted in a contemporary way. Five times a day, the call to prayer of the muezzin echos throughout Oman, to remind the believers of one of the five pillars of Islam – the daily prayer. The Omani historian As Salimi described the origin of the Ibadiya Islamic doctrine as follows: “The Ibadiya is like a bird whose egg was placed in Medina, hatched in Basra and then settled in Oman.”
